Since the launch of VanDAO in January 2022 we've had an opportunity to see the results of our various Web3 experiments and explore the concepts around self-governance and the decentralization of my brand - Vandal aka Rare Vandal.
Through all of this, I'm now looking at how to implement sustainable measures with NFTs and the DAO through the creation of the VanDAO Membership NFTs, which were designed by a Paras artist - Chibigenix.
Why Membership?
As a Decentralised Artist Operation (DAO), membership plays a crucial role in the decision making process and can provide key contributors a potential added benefit for their participation.
VanDAO membership signifies an allegiance to the tribe, with each member bestowed the title of Vandal, and comes with a varying degree of privileges, permissions & status.
Hierarchy is still important, even within distributed systems, and will be implemented in as 'flat' a way possible. For this reason I've designed a tiered system that I'll outline below.
Lastly, another important feature of the VanDAO membership structure is tribute. "Vandals" who have skin in the game will be more likely to participate and contribute, and when it comes to certain aspects of governance this is extremely important for the DAO to function optimally. The other purpose for 'tribute' is to support the sustainability goals of the DAO.
Membership Tiers:
A tiered membership structure seems the most logical one. It also allows us to raise funds for the DAO treasury, where the Blood, Sweat & Tears Memberships will be sold as NFTs on Paras at teh beginning of March 2022.
Family Circle
- Blood Vandal (x1)
- Sweat Vandal (x3)
- Tears Vandal (x6)
Crew Circle
- Los Vandalitos (x1000)
Each Membership is represented as an NFT and the associated NEAR wallet will be added to a group created on the DAO.
Blood, Sweat & Tears - The Family Circle
Blood, Sweat & Tears Membership NFTs will be sold here on Paras with the proceeds going to fund VanDAO projects and to be reinvested into the ecosystem.
Combined, the Family Circle will hold an 8% royalty of ALL NFTs sold & distributed via VanDAO & Rare Vandal. The funds raised from the Sale will be distributed as follows:
> 50% Swapped to stables & staked in the StableSwap LP for farming over a 3 Month Period then moved to the DAO treasury
> 50% To the DAO treasury for ecosystem projects fueled by the 3 Family Circle Funds spread out over the course of 3 months
Blood
The Blood Membership NFT is without a doubt the most valuable of VanDAO Memberships available. Limited to 1 edition only, the Blood Vandal can direct 30% of the monthly funding budget if they choose. If they don't, the funds will be delegated to Vandal to direct on their behalf.

Sweat
The Sweat Membership NFT is limited to 3 editions. The Sweat Vandals can direct 30% (10% each) of the monthly funding budget if they choose. If they don't, the funds will be delegated to Vandal to direct on their behalf.

Tears
The Tears Vandal Membership NFT is limited to 6 editions. The Tears Vandals can direct 30% of the monthly funding budget if they choose. If they don't, the funds will be delegated to Vandal to direct on their behalf.

- 0.5% Royalty Split on NFTs
- WL on all VanDAO NFT projects
- The Tears Fund (40% of total)
The Family Circle will have a dedicated Group on AstroDAO where they can engage in governance should they choose to. It's not mandatory and participation is optional. I do hope that at the very least the Family Circle will be active in the Telegram channel and signaling their support for proposals from the community from April 2022 onward.
Los Vandalitos - The Crew Circle
The "Crew Circle" NFT will be set at 2 N, regardless of the market value of NEAR. Don't have NEAR to purchase it? You can earn Tips in $NEAR by contributing to VanDAO in a variety of ways!
Members of the Crew Circle can participate in basic community governance, polls, bounties and are whitelisted for most NFT drops, bounties, events & activities. This category is expected to be assumed by fans and passive supporters.
The DAO
Governance will take place both on-chain through proposals to the DAO and group polls, as well as off-chain in the Governance Forum & Telegram Group.
The VanDAO is using AstroDAO on the NEAR Protocol. The governance structure revolves around the ability for members to participate in groups according to their membership tier. Each 'circle' will have assigned permissions and based on the activity on the forum and in the Telegram channel we will use polls to direct a large portion of the activities we undertake, together.

DAO Sustainability
This is an important question that can only be answered over time. Initially, VanDAO will be funded through the support of NEAR, by myself and the sale of Membership NFTs.
There is a funding stream for monthly creative and marketing initiatives, but this will not be something to expect for the long-term, so putting these funds to use most effectively should be a priority.
Aspects of sustainability can be found in staking and other DeFi activities, as well as the creation and distribution of a governance token. Of course the sales of NFTs, rental of Metaverse properties, events and some other creative initiatives inspired by the community are all ways to turn VanDAO into a thriving and sustainable DAO.
Ultimately, community is everything. We are only as strong as the Blood, Sweat & Tears we put in. That means you, whether Family or Crew, our success boils down to the quality of our contributions and the strength of our intetions.
